I wish the average dog owner could spend a day as just an observer at their local veterinary hospital,,,
Early in my dog career I took schooling to become a veterinary technician, then spent several years working in animal hospitals in every area from management to assisting in surgery. It was an wonderful foundation to every facet of what followed in my life as a dog breeder and more importantly, a dog lover… Our beloved canine companions are bombarded with everything from flea and tick products that when absorbed through the skin will kill insects that bite as much as 30 days after application! A popular commercial shows an adorable little Beagle running in his backyard via a plastic tunnel (to protect him from lurking fleas and ticks), the announcer happily states that the use of this new drug on your pet will ensure a happy insect free life. A bit of research though shows that there are numerous claims of animal illness and death after using Trifexis, there’s even a Facebook page will thousands of owners calling for the recall of this supposedly “safe” insecticide.
They are fed diets that are appallingly lacking in a multitude of ways, ingredient lists that when deciphered reveal appalling hidden by-products. Foods that are preservative filled, processed at extreme high temperatures which extend shelf life to years, but so completely sterilize in an attempt to kill harmful bacteria that the very process destroys most of the nutrients that you bought that extremely expensive dog food for in the first place!
I read a sobering study by a leading veterinarian the other day that said an estimated 60% of all Golden Retrievers will die of cancer. This lovely breed of dog, like many others, all suffering ill health and disease, often early death and many of the causes of all that heartbreak are perhaps preventable if we as owners will begin making even a few small changes & start giving our pets the support their systems require to live long healthy lives.
